A project that began last week on Lowellville Road should be finished by the end of this week, said Struthers Mayor Terry Stocker.

The $460,000 resurfacing project was funded through a federal grant for $350,000 and Ohio Public Works Commission grant for $100,000, Stocker said.

Two more projects that include new sidewalks and lighting in the area of Yellow Creek Park and State Street will begin shortly, Stocker said.

One project is being done in partnership with Mill Creek MetroParks, which leases Yellow Creek Park from the city, and Mahoning County.

That $300,000 project includes rehabilitating the bridge over Yellow Creek, expanding the entrance to the park; installing new curbs, sidewalks and decorative lights on the bridge and in part of the downtown nearby; and a pedestrian overlook at the left corner of Bridge Street and Lowellville Road.

The project is mostly funded by a federal Transportation Enhancement Program grant of $240,000. The county, Mill Creek MetroParks and the city are funding the remaining $60,000.

On the park-entrance side of the street, the city will install new sidewalks from the intersection of State Street and State Route 616 to approximately 200 feet east of the park entrance, Stocker said. The city is using $52,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds for that project.

Stocker said the city hopes the projects will be finished by the end of November, weather permitting. If not, he said, work will continue in the spring.
