Man who fled into river faces multiple charges

WARREN

A Youngstown man who police say fled into the Mahoning River in a failed attempt to elude capture has been indicted on charges of failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, receiving stolen property and failure to stop after an accident.

Keylin D. Shaw, 26, of Camden Avenue, will be arraigned on the charges at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. If convicted, he faces up to 71/2 years in prison.

Police attempted to make a traffic stop on Shaw on Aug. 28, but Shaw fled on Highland Avenue Southwest, then crashed head-on into a pickup truck on Main Avenue Southwest and fled on foot into the river near the former RG Steel mill.

An officer chased Shaw and ended up in the river with him before making the arrest.

The 2012 Dodge Charger Shaw was driving had been stolen from Enterprise Rent A Car in Boardman Aug. 4.

Meanwhile, John M. Smith, 49, of Idylwild Street Northeast, was indicted on one count of aggravated arson for purportedly setting fire to the house where he lived with his girlfriend and her four children Aug. 6.

Warren officials said Smith set fire to the house at 3:16 a.m. after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

Fire Chief Ken Nussle said investigators believe Smith threw something on fire into the kitchen through a window.

The fire caused about $12,000 damage to the kitchen and porch, but no one was injured.

If convicted, Smith could get up to eight years in prison.
