YSU baseball team signs three recruits

YOUNGSTOWN

Joe King, Matt Sullivan and Shane Willoughby have each signed a national letter of intent to continue their baseball careers at Youngstown State University starting in the 2013-14 season.

King is a left-handed pitcher and first baseman from Woodbridge, Va.; Sullivan is an infielder from Centerville, Ohio; and Willoughby is an infielder from Lawrence, Kan.

King and Willoughby are both high school seniors while Sullivan is currently a sophomore at Sinclair Community College.

Sullivan is a 6-foot-4, right-handed hitting infielder.

As a freshman at Sinclair Community College in 2012, Sullivan batted .317 with 16 extra-base hits in 52 games.

Willoughby has played shortstop, third base and pitcher for Lawrence High in leading the Lions to a regional championship in 2012.

Rasor plays at Thiel

Greenville, pa.

Mike Rasor, a 2009 Austintown Fitch graduate was a three-year starter on the offensive line playing both guard and center on the Thiel College football team.

He was selected to the all-PAC football team in 2011 and this year was voted one of three team captains.

At Fitch he was a two-year letter winner starting all ten games as a senior. Mike’s twin brother, Dan, is a member of the Thiel golf team and has been a student assistant coach for the Tomcats football program for the past four seasons.

Akron gets Ricketts

Alex Ricketts, a senior at Kennedy Catholic High School, has accepted a basketball scholarship to play at Akron Univ.

Ricketts has scored 969 points in her first three seasons with the Eagles.

Contador unsure about 2013 Tour invite

MADRID

Alberto Contador has asked Tour de France organizers if his SaxoBank team will be invited to compete in next year’s race.

The two-time champion was stripped of his 2010 Tour title for testing positive for clenbuterol. He missed last year’s race while serving a ban.

The Spaniard said his request is “not a means of pressuring” organizers. But “we are waiting to see if we will be a World Tour team or not. If not, we’ll need an invitation for the grand tours.”

Dundee estate selling gloves from 2 Ali fights

Gloves from two of Muhammad Ali’s biggest fights are among items being auctioned off by the estate of his former trainer, Angelo Dundee.

One set of gloves was worn by Ali when he won the title from Sonny Liston in a huge upset in 1964, while the other set is from his “Fight of the Century” loss at Madison Square Garden in 1971 to Joe Frazier.

Dundee’s son, Jim, said the gloves have been stored in a safe deposit box since the fights. They are among more than 100 items that the family is selling in the online sale by SCP Auctions.

Chevrolet unveils 2013 Sprint Cup race car

LAS VEGAS

Chevrolet unveiled its 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup car Thursday.

The matching Chevrolet SS passenger car, a new rear-wheel drive vehicle that will be available in showrooms in August, will be unveiled in February around the season-opening Daytona 500, when it will debut on the track.

The passenger car will be built in Australia and sold in the U.S.

It’s the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan in the U.S., and Chevy will rely on the engineering, technology and infrastructure used to build the Holden Commodore in Australia to build the SS.
