Many students in Dana Elias’ third-grade class at Watson Elementary had never baked pies before Nov. 16, when they, with the help of parent, teacher, and even educational board volunteers, prepared pumpkin, apple, and cherry pies to donate to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

Students prepared the pies as part of a lesson that combined math (measuring ingredients) with social studies (giving back to the community). Elias said she came up with the idea because she also baked pies in fifth grade when she was in school and she remembered the lesson all her life.

“When the students learned about the Mission and what little some people have, they learned what things in their life they should really be thankful for. I knew I wanted to do something with cooking for a lesson in class and I thought this would be a great way to teach them and also give them an opportunity to give back,” Elias said.

Tom Stellers, a member of the Austintown Board of Education, helped the students make the pies.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the kids to display their desire to help others. The kids also wrote notes to the people at the Mission to go along with the pies,” Stellers said.

The pies were prepared in the classroom and baked by the staff in the Frank Ohl cafeteria.
