Benefit tonight for cop with cancer in Struthers

St. Nicholas Hall, 764 Fifth St., will host a benefit dinner for a Youngstown police officer and his family from 5 to 9 p.m. today. The church is offering a spaghetti dinner for Officer Vic Gasior, a 15-year veteran who is battling stage-3 melanoma cancer. The evening will include Rust Belt beer, a disc-jockey, 50/50 raffle, games, bounce castles, clowns and Santa Claus. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children, with takeout meals available. All proceeds will go to Gasior, his wife and three children for costs they may incur during his treatment.

Pets die in suspicious fire in Youngstown

Three pets died after a suspicious fire destroyed a home at 195 W. Myrtle Ave. No one was home when the fire broke out at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. The homeowner told the city fire department she was not gone long and the house was fine when she left. A battalion chief said there were multiple set points. The homeowner said her family does not have any problems with anyone. She, her husband and their 19-year-old daughter are staying with a relative. Two cats and a dog were killed, the battalion chief said.

Benefit concert planned in memory of student

A concert to benefit the Brandy Stevens-Rosine Memorial Fund is planned for Saturday. Twelve bands will play from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Refuge, Ministries, 1155 Church Hill-Hubbard Road. A Mario Kart tournament, 50-50 raffle, bike raffle and auction also are planned. Cost is $5 for ages 12 and up and $3 for those younger than 12. Brandy Stevens-Rosine was a Youngstown State University student who was murdered last spring. She would have celebrated her 21st birthday today.

Dog licenses go on sale in Columbiana County

Columbiana County dog owners can buy dog licenses at outside vendors beginning Saturday, and at the county auditor’s office, 105 S. Market St., beginning Monday through Jan. 31. All dogs at least 3 months old must have a license, which must be renewed annually. Fees are $8 each. Outside vendor include Ace Hardware, Columbiana; Damascus General Hardware; Carol’s Corner and Adrian’s Restaurant, East Liverpool; Fuller’s Hardware, East Palestine: Hanoverton Pro Hardware; Dickey’s True Value Hardware, Negley; Yard Bark, Salem; Jenkins Feed & Supply, Salineville; Center Pharmacy, Wellsville.

Rescue Mission auction set Tuesday in Hubbard

A Quarter’s Auction fundraiser to benefit the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley will be Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Parish Center, 325 N. Main St. For each bid by a paddle, a quarter will be collected from the bidder. A random paddle number is drawn by the auctioneer and the bidder with that number wins the item. If there is no winner, all paddle numbers are returned to the drawing container for another bidding on the item. Items include gift certificates for limousine service, restaurants, homemade candles, Thirtyone Gifts, Silpada Jewelry, Pampered Chef, Beautiful Sugar Confections, Avon, and graphic art prints and collectables from Bob Barko Jr.’s Steel Town Studios. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the auction, presented by FOCUS Events, begins at 6. Admission is $10 and includes, a raffle ticket and light refreshments. Guests are encouraged to bring a roll of quarters for bidding and a canned-good item for an extra raffle ticket.
