New gynecologist

FARRELL, PA.

Dr. Ira S. Abramowitz, board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, is coming to Magee Women’s Specialty Services at UPMC Horizon, effective Monday.

He earned his medical degree from State University of New York–Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y., and completed internships, a residency and was a chief resident at SUNY–Downstate affiliates.

Nomination deadlines for two of the Ohio Department of Aging’s highest recognitions for older adults are fast approaching, and Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of the department, encourages all Ohioans to nominate outstanding elders they know for the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame and the Joined Hearts in Giving Award.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame will be accepted through Sunday, and for Joined Hearts in Giving through Dec. 31. Nomination forms are on the department’s website at www.aging.ohio.gov/news/nominations/.

The Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements and contributions of older adults, as well as the vital role they play in their communities, across the state and nationwide. Nominees must be age 60 or older and be native-born Ohioans or residents of the state for at least 10 years. Posthumous nominations are accepted.

The Joined Hearts in Giving Award is presented in conjunction with the first lady of Ohio, Karen Waldbillig Kasich, and honors Ohio couples who share a lifelong commitment not only to each other, but also to their community through volunteerism. Eligible couples must have been married for at least 40 years with one of the spouses being at least 60. Each spouse must actively participate and volunteer in community service, and the couple’s primary residence must be in Ohio.

The department accepts nominations for these honors as well as the Elder Caregiver Award year-round. Nominations received after the annual deadlines will be held and considered for the following year. The individuals being recognized must be aware of and consent to the nomination. Nominations are evaluated by a panel of department staff and state and local partners based on objective criteria.

Memorial tree

FARRELL, PA.

The UPMC Horizon Birth Place will unveil its Memorial Tree in honor of babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Birth Place waiting room on the second floor of the Shenango Valley campus.

The event is free, and all are welcome to remember and share with others who have had similar experiences. Ribbons will be available for signing and placing on the tree. Participants will also have the opportunity to make a tree ornament to take home and to make cards for the hospital’s Empty Arms program.

Immunization clinic

NILES

The Niles City Health Department, 34 W. State St., is offering immunization clinics for children from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and Dec. 19. No appointment is necessary. No one will be refused because of inability to pay.

Parents must bring their child’s immunization records. Child should be feeling well, with no illness, fever or rash. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
