1987: Members of USW Local 7275 vote 106-61 to approve a contract with Wean Industries that will reduce the hourly wage by $1.67 to $10.889 per hour and include fringe benefit concessions equal to about another $3 per hour.

First Year basketball Coach Jim Cleamons and the Youngstown State University Penguins will launch their 1987-88 season against the College of Wooster in a game that has been moved to 3 p.m. to allow fans to catch the broadcast of YSU’s football playoff game against Northern Iowa in the evening.

E.J. Keener, president and treasurer of Keener Motors, his wife, and his 91-year-old mother-in-law, Nettie Morris, escaped from an early morning fire that heavily damaged his home at 279 Crandall Ave. But Keener was mourning the death of his 11-year-old Welsh Corgi dog, Brythe, which died of asphyxiation.

1937: Downtown Youngs-town stores are jammed with shoppers and a survey of merchants shows spending is about the same as that for the corresponding Saturday in 1936.

Mrs. Christian Gross of Columbus, state president of the Ohio Motion Picture Council, tells 200 people at a dinner sponsored by the Institute of Photoplay Appreciation at the Youngstown YMCA that more needs to be done to get “cleaner pictures,” especially for the young.
