Smoky Hollow to celebrate Thursday

Wick Neighbors, Inc. (WNI) announces the completion of the next essential step of the Wick District-Smoky Hollow Development Project with the installation of new water and sewer infrastructure along Walnut Street.

WNI provided the required non-federal monetary match for this phase of the project, with generous support from our membership and local foundations.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 29 at 9:00 a.m. at Cassese’s MVR Restaurant, 410 N. Walnut Street, Youngtown, OH.

WNI received a $665,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Economic Development Incentive Program through the efforts of Senator Sherrod Brown, a $550,000 grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through the efforts of Congressman Tim Ryan, and over $250,000 from the City of Youngstown for this infrastructure improvement project.

The Walnut Street Infrastructure Project involved engineering, design and replacement of water and sewer lines along one main artery in Smoky Hollow, providing the foundational basis for future development. The project utilized locally based CT Consultants for consulting, design and engineering. The infrastructure construction was completed by Utility Contractors of Austintown, with oversight and coordination by the City of Youngstown.

Smoky Hollow is strategically located, adjacent to the “Cultural Corridor” of Wick Avenue and Youngstown State University, and spans the area from Youngstown’s Central Business District on the south, Wick Park on the north, St. Elizabeth’s on the west and Andrews Avenue on the east.  WNI is focused on the revitalization of a livable, walk-able, mixed-use neighborhood in the heart of Youngstown.
