The elections boards in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties certified the results of the Nov. 6 election Tuesday, with only two issues — one in Trumbull and one in Columbiana — being close enough to warrant an automatic recount.

The certification means the outcomes reported on election night now are official.

The Trumbull County elections board will have a recount at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for the 1-mill additional Hartford Township fire levy. The certified results show the levy passed 564 to 559.

Kelly Pallante, elections board director, noted at Tuesday’s board meeting she is surprised at the relatively low voter turnout — Trumbull had 68 percent of registered voters.

The county had a 72.65 percent turnout in the 2008 presidential election.

Pallante said she believes the county’s turnout was above 70 percent in each of the last three to four presidential elections.

Mahoning County had a 70 percent turnout this election compared with 72.31 percent in 2008.

Columbiana County had a 68.58 percent turnout this election compared with 70.31 percent in 2008.

None of the races in Mahoning County was close enough for an automatic recount, director Tom McCabe of the Mahoning County elections board said at the board’s vote-certification meeting Tuesday.

In Columbiana County, Democrat Nick Barborak has beaten Republican incumbent Craig E. Newbold for the 5th Ohio House of Representatives seat by 507 votes.

To qualify for a recount, the margin of victory needed to be 291 votes or fewer.

The Columbiana County Board of Elections will conduct an automatic recount for the liquor option for the Glenmoor Marathon station in St. Clair Township near East Liverpool, which won by one vote — 149 to 148.

Board officials say recounts in recent years have not produced any changes in vote totals, and they don’t expect them to produce a change this year.
