Action expected on funding for Trumbull road-paving projects

Trumbull County commissioners are expected today to authorize applications to the Ohio Public Works Commission for $1.4 million in road-paving projects to be carried out next summer.

The three projects — on Larchmont Avenue in Howland Township, Educational Highway in Champion Township and North River Road in Howland Township — are all on county roads just north of Warren.

The portion of Larchmont Avenue to be paved is from the Warren city limits north to the state Route 5 Bypass. The portion of North River is from North Road east to state Route 46. All of Educational Highway will be repaved.

Don Barzak, director of governmental affairs for county Engineer Randy Smith, said the county engineer’s office will carry out the projects in 30 to 40 days, most likely starting in August.

That way, the Educational Highway project will be out of the way before school starts in the fall. Educational Highway is one of the main roads leading to the Trumbull Career and Technical Center, Kent State University at Trumbull and a Fairhaven sheltered workshop.

The projects will use $980,487 in Ohio Public Works Commission money and $440,508 from local funds. The District 6 Public Works Integrating Committee, which meets in Youngstown, already has approved the OPWC funding for the projects, Barzak said.

The $980,487 is likely to be released from the state in July.
