Man’s trial to resume

WARREN

Derrick L. Cobb, 50, of Difford Drive in Niles, went on trial Monday on charges of felonious assault and kidnapping of a woman in December 2011 at a home on Delaware Street Southwest.

If convicted, Cobb could get close to 20 years in prison. The jury trial resumes today in the courtroom of Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Warren police said they went to a home on Hamilton Street Southwest and found a 43-year-old Esther Avenue Northwest woman badly beaten.

She told police Cobb, her boyfriend, had accused her of cheating on him with another man, held a knife to her chest and threatened to kill her.

Over two hours, Cobb is accused of striking the woman in the face, arms, legs and torso repeatedly and stomping on her torso.

Foundation will meet

WARREN

The Lateral Foundation, a new nonprofit established to provide services to selected felons released from prison, will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trumbull County Commissioners’ office on High Street to explain the program to government officials and the public.

Established in Niles at 110 E. State St., the Lateral Foundation will provide mental-health counseling for substance abuse and domestic violence as well as job training, education, housing, community service and spiritual growth, said Dr. Anthony J. Montevideo, a retired dentist and public relations director for the organization.

The organization’s founders believe that establishing the foundation will not only assist felons to become integrated back into society, but also reduce the recidivism rate and improve the community, Dr. Montevideo said.

Pet Photo Day at mall

Southern Park Mall will host Pet Photo Day from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9 during which people can bring in pets for photos with Santa Claus.

The mall also is asking the community to support area animal shelters by dropping donations at Copper Zone Tanning, located in the J.C. Penney concourse. The “Santa Paws” wish list includes dog, cat and rabbit food, treats and toys, towels, collars, litter and more.

Donations must be received by Dec. 17 and will be divided among Animal Charity in Youngstown, Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary in Salem and the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County in Warren.

COLUMBUS

The text of Senate Bill 193, which created a mandatory online registry for scrap-metal and bulk-merchandise-container dealers, is available on Ohio Homeland Security’s website https://ext.dps.state.oh.us/ScrapDealer/Pages/Public/Login.aspx.

The online registry aims to create an infrastructure within the industry to crack down on scrap theft, thereby protecting Ohio’s infrastructure by focusing on the end point — the dealers and recycling facilities.

Route 46 meeting

Canfield

Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 has announced a public meeting for proposed construction on state Route 46.

The meeting is from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the South Range School K-12 Complex at 11300 Columbiana-Canfield Road (state Route 46).

ODOT plans to widen a short portion of Route 46 in front of the complex to add northbound and southbound left turn lanes and a northbound right turn lane into the South Range Athletic Fields.

The project also includes the construction of a pedestrian tunnel under Route 46 to connect the school building to the sports complex.
