1789: Nov. 26 is a day of thanksgiving set aside by President George Washington to observe the adoption of the Constitution of the United States.

1842: The founders of the University of Notre Dame arrive at the school’s present-day site near South Bend, Ind.

1942: President Franklin D. Roosevelt orders nationwide gasoline rationing, beginning Dec. 1.

1943: During World War II, the HMT Rohna, a British transport ship carrying American soldiers, is hit by a German missile off Algeria; 1,138 men are killed.

1950: China enters the Korean War, launching a counteroffensive against soldiers from the United Nations, the U.S. and South Korea.

1992: The British government announces that Queen Elizabeth II has volunteered to start paying taxes on her personal income, and would take her children off the public payroll.

Youngstown State University football coach Jim Tressel and his four captains, Dave Janofa, Trenton Lykes, Jerry Dunlap and Mike Peterson, are preparing for the Penguins’ Division I-AA playoff game against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

1972: Warren Western Reserve High School explodes for four touchdowns in the final period and turns the Ohio Class AAA championship football game into a 37-6 rout of Cincinnati Princeton.

1962: Edward E. Hargett, special agent in charge of the Cleveland office of the FBI, arrives in Youngstown to personally direct the federal investigation into the bombing that killed Charles Cavallaro, 60, and his son, Thomas, 14.

Stark County deputies arrest 15 employees at a Canton discount store for violating Ohio’s Sunday-closing law, forcing the store to close. The employees are booked at the Canton City Jail before being released on bond.

1937: A quick-thinking Chaney grid team capitalizes on the breaks to beat East High 6-0 in their Thanksgiving Day game, winning the city championship for the second consecutive year.

Youngstown Traffic Officer Daniel Popovich is beaten by a gang of six men after he tried to write a traffic violation ticket for a car that was headed against traffic on Powersdale Avenue near Alexander Street.
