High school bands to jam at rock show

Rock Jam III, an all-ages rock show that will feature seven regional high school rock bands, will run from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Rodeo Music Hall (formerly Privilege nightclub), in Wedgewood Plaza, corner of New and Raccoon roads.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Scheduled to play are Danny McMaster, Hold No Grudge, Noize from the Basement, Northern Whale, Sin ’Till Sunday (formerly Deo Vindice), Solar Pilots and Vinyl Dynamite.

Canadian guitarist to perform at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

The Dana School of Music will present a free recital by Canadian-born guitarist Andrew Mah at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Bliss Recital Hall, inside Bliss Hall, Wick Avenue.

Mah has performed professionally for more than 17 years, touring France in 1990 with the ensemble Guitares Nouvelle France. He is currently collaborating with composers Roddy Ellias and Vasco Martins on new music for solo guitar.

An avid arranger and ensemble musician, he specializes in transcribing complex music by ear.

Jazz combos to play standards, originals

The Dana School of Music will present a free performance by jazz combos led by Dave Kana, Ken Karsh and Jeff Bush at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center, on the Youngstown State University campus.

The concert will feature jazz standards and original works by students Kevin Snyder, Nate Gelfand, Rob Chase and Nick Sainato.

One Direction’s “Take Me Home” is taking the boys to the top of the charts — and to new heights.

The group’s sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It’s the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s “Red,” which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons’ “Babel,” which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.
