Doctor: boxer Hector Camacho is brain dead

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

Famed Puerto Rican boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho is clinically brain dead, doctors said Thursday, but family members disagreed on whether to take him off life support and two of the fighter’s aunts said later that relatives had agreed to wait two more days.

Dr. Ernesto Torres said doctors had no more medical tests to perform on Camacho, who was shot in the face Tuesday night.

“We have done everything we could,” said Torres, who is director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

“We have to tell the people of Puerto Rico and the entire world that Macho Camacho has died, he is brain dead.”

Atletico advances in Europa League

Defending champion Atletico Madrid was one of 13 teams to advance to the knockout stage in the Europa Soccer League on Thursday, while Liverpool must wait after conceding a stunning late equalizer to Young Boys.

Raul Garcia scored early in Atletico’s 1-0 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv, allowing the Spanish side to reach the last 32 from Group B with Viktoria Plzen.

Napoli, Lazio and wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala were among the other sides to advance, leaving five qualifying places up for grabs in the final round of games in two weeks.

Liverpool will hope to join Anzhi from Group A, but needs to beat Udinese on the road.

Schumacher relaxed for farewell race

Michael Schumacher’s main goal entering his final Formula One race on Sunday is to have some fun.

The seven-time world champion will finish F1’s most successful career at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, hoping that he can enjoy the moment without the pressure of having to do well on the track.

Schumacher retired for the first time after the 2006 season, when he came to the finale in Interlagos still fighting for the championship.

Out of contention this time, the 43-year-old German driver said Thursday that he comes to the Brazilian GP looking to “just take the best out of it and enjoy it as much as I can.”

US teen Shiffrin shines on slopes before Aspen

This is what teenager Mikaela Shiffrin enjoys about skiing: Going fast, goofing around with friends on the slopes and grabbing quick sips of hot chocolate between runs on cold days.

SD Sockers look for record 41st straight win

The San Diego Sockers will set a U.S. professional team record if they win their 41st straight soccer game tonight.

The Sockers will face the Toros de Mexico at the former San Diego Sports Arena.

The Sockers beat the Arizona Storm last weekend to tie the record of 40 straight victories set by the Sioux Falls Storm of United Indoor Football from 2005-2008.
