Boardman students earn commended award

Boardman students Daniel Belinky, Michael Marshall and John Umble have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter-of-commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their academic promise. Commended Students have placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Belinky is the son of Mark and Cynthia Belinky. He is the school’s student council president and the commissioner of the Link Crew mentoring program. Belinky is currently considering attending Ohio State University or the University of Pittsburgh and majoring in engineering.

Marshall is the son of Daniel and Carolyn Marshall. He is captain of the school’s debate team and he represented Boardman High School last summer at Buckeye Boys State. Marshall is currently considering Washington and Lee University or Case Western Reserve University and majoring in English literature and political science.

Umble is the son of Jim and Kathryn Umble. He is an AP Scholar and he just recently won the school orchestra’s senior solo competition to perform a violin solo with the symphony orchestra. Umble is currently considering between Youngstown State University, Case Western Reserve University or Grove City College and majoring in biology.
