New offer, similar result: The NHL Players’ Association entered negotiations on Wednesday with a proposal that was requested by the NHL on Monday night, but what it contained produced no progress. Union head Donald Fehr said the talks generated “no movement” on the major issues. The union said that its offer left the sides less than $40 million apart annually over a five-year contract. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman immediately rejected the plan, saying “we’re still far apart.” Union officials and nine players went to the NHL office in the morning and spent about an hour making the proposal. After a 90-minute break, the sides met again for two hours, decided there was nothing more to talk about for now and headed off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

What we missed: A very heavy pre-Thanksgiving hockey feast of 12 games was lost, including a visit by the Chicago Blackhawks to Los Angeles to take on the Stanley Cup champion Kings in an attractive Western Conference matchup. The Kings didn’t have to face the Blackhawks en route to their first Stanley Cup title because Chicago was eliminated in the first round by Phoenix. The first five games of that six-game series were decided in overtime — three won by Phoenix.
