Toledo beats Akron


— Austin Dantin threw five touchdown passes to help Toledo beat Akron 35-23 on Tuesday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Dantin was 29 of 35 for 327 yards with an interception for the Rockets (9-3, 6-2 Mid-American). David Pasquale caught seven passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and ran for 93 yards on 15 carries, and Alonzo Russell had nine receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Cardinal Mooney High School graduate Vince Penza punted four times for a 42-yard average. He dropped two punts inside Akron's 20-yard line.

Dantin threw three TD passes in the second quarter — connecting with Russell on 23- and 39-yard strikes and Pasquale on a 55-yarder — to give the Rockets a 21-17 lead. In the fourth quarter, Dantin added a 2-yard scoring pass to Alex Zmolik and a 3-yarder to Justin Olack to make it 35-17.

After Toledo pulled ahead at 14-10, Akron (1-11, 0-8) briefly regained the lead on Kyle Pohl’s 30-yard TD pass to Keith Sconiers. Akron opened the scoring on Robert Stein’s 31-yard field goal and made it 10-0 late in the first quarter on Jawon Chisholm’s 4-yard scoring run.

Pohl also threw a 3-yard TD pass to Jerrod Dillard with 3:30 left in the game.

Pohl was 28 of 42 for 213 yards with an interception.
