3 get prison in failed bomb plot

AKRON

Three men were sentenced Tuesday after admitting taking part in an unsuccessful plot to bomb a highway bridge in Ohio with what turned out to be a dud device provided by a government informant.

All three defendants — Connor Stevens, 21, Douglas Wright, 27, and Brandon Baxter, 21— apologized in court. Their attorneys said the sentences would be appealed.

Wright, an Indianapolis man authorities called the ringleader, received the toughest sentence, 111/2 years.

Baxter, of Lakewood in suburban Cleveland, was given nearly 10 years in prison. Stevens, of Berea, the least involved of the trio, was sentenced to more than eight years.

No arrests in deadly Ind. blast

INDIANAPOLIS

Investigators said Tuesday that no arrests have been made in connection with an Indianapolis house explosion that killed two people and destroyed at least five homes but that authorities still were serving search warrants and questioning people.

Prosecutor Terry Curry told The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday that search warrants had been executed and people were questioned, but he declined to discuss who was questioned or where the warrants had been served.

Girl, 13, fatally shot on Fla. school bus

MIAMI

A South Florida teen has been charged with fatally shooting a girl in front of her sister and several other students while riding the bus to school.

Miami-Dade police say the 15-year-old was taken into custody at the scene in Homestead on Tuesday morning and later charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm. The Associated Press does not identify juvenile offenders.

An arrest report says the minor took a gun from his backpack and began displaying it on the bus. He then fired it once, hitting 13-year-old Lourdes Guzman. She was airlifted to a Miami hospital, where she died.

SF lawmakers vote to ban public nudity

SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco lawmakers disappointed committed nudists Tuesday by narrowly approving a ban on public nakedness despite concerns the measure would undermine the city’s reputation as a sanctuary for free expression.

The Board of Supervisors voted 6-5 in favor of a public-safety ordinance that prohibits exposed genitals in most public places, including streets, sidewalks and public transit. The law still must pass a final vote and secure Mayor Edwin Lee’s signature to take effect early next year.

Irish drop 3 doctors from death probe

DUBLIN

The Irish government removed three doctors Tuesday from its investigation into the death of an ailing woman who was denied an abortion in an Irish hospital, a case that has exposed Ireland to worldwide criticism.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny told lawmakers he hoped the move — barely 24 hours after Ireland unveiled the seven-member panel — would allow the woman’s widower to support the probe into why Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian dentist, died Oct. 28 while hospitalized in Galway.

The European Court of Human Rights two years ago ruled that Ireland was placing pregnant women in jeopardy by not providing a clear law defining when life-saving abortions can be performed. Ireland has yet to reply substantively to that judgment.
