Cleveland

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team competed against Cleveland State, Michigan State, Xavier (Ohio), Saint Francis (Pa.) and Duquesne at the First Annual Magnus Cup Invitational.

YSU scored 513.5 points in the event to place sixth.

Michigan State had 1,741.5 for first place while second-place Cleveland State scored 1,328.

Sophomore Ashley Dow tied for first place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.88).

Dow was second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.93). She was third in the 50 backstroke (27.07.

Senior Samantha Roberts was third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.33).

Barzak named to all-tournament team

PITTSBURGH, Pa.

Thiel senior forward Kelly Barzak (Howland High) was named to the La Roche Tip-Off all-tournament basketball team on Saturday.

Barzak, who was an All-PAC second team selection the last two seasons, scored 15 points and led the Tomcats with nine rebounds and five blocks Friday.

Barzak had 23 points Saturday in a 76-74 loss to Juniata.

Volleyball stalemate

The ITCL all-star volleyball match, held at Crestview High School on Sunday, was called a 2-2 tie by mutual agreement of the coaches.

The Red team won the first two games, 25-22, 25-18.

The Blue team then won twice, 30-28, 25-20.

Pete Rose ban document fails to sell

NEW YORK

Pete Rose’s copy of the 1990 agreement in which he accepted a lifetime ban from baseball failed to sell at auction because no bid met the minimum.

Goldin Auctions said Sunday the highest bid was $236,000, a price that would have been raised to $258,600 including the auctioneer’s 10 percent fee.

Bidding began Oct. 16 and ran through Saturday.

Ken Goldin says in an email to The Associated Press that “I am working on selling it privately for the consignor.”

The seller has not been identified, but Goldin says it is not Rose.

Among the items that did sell were Barry Lyons’ 1986 Mets World Series ring ($22,840), a 2009 Derek Jeter game-used bat ($8,982) and Michael Jordan’s American Express card ($3,146).

Death threats received after poppy protest

LONDON

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill says Irish winger James McClean has received death threats after refusing to wear an embroidered poppy on his soccer shirt for a Premier League match.

Police are investigating reports the 23-year-old McClean received the threats on a social networking site. McClean was the only Sunderland player to appear against Everton last weekend and not wear a jersey with a poppy to commemorate Remembrance Day, honoring those who sacrificed their lives in wars.

Teen wins 2nd gold at Asian championships

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates

Teenager Xu Danlu on Sunday won her second gold in record time at the Asian swimming championships, leading another day of Chinese dominance at the competition.

The 13-year-old set a personal best of 8:22.24 for victory in the 800-meter freestyle, taking almost 16 seconds off Zhang Yan’s competition record that stood for 12 years.

She won her first ever Asian gold Saturday in the 400 free.

China won eight of nine events on the final day of swimming, with only Choi Hye-ra breaking the stranglehold.
