Salinas rebounds to defeat Maynor

A first-round knockdown and subsequent stare down by opponent Chris Maynor only served as inspiration for Youngstown boxer Alejandro “Popo” Salinas.
When their bout was over, it was Salinas doing the staring in the feature event of trainer Jack Loew’s 21st Annual Thanksgiving Feast 10-Bout Amateur Boxing Card at St. Lucy’s Palermo Center.
Salinas (61-11) cannot wait now for another opportunity to meet Maynor.
“My strategy was to come out and work hard, but when he came out aggressive and sloppy I just went to my power,” Salinas said.
Salinas felt that he slipped in the first-round but referee Wilfredo Osorio called it a knockdown.
Chris Daniels of the South Side Boxing Club improved to 3-2 by stopping Jacob Bishak of Pittsburgh in a 64-pound scrap.
Youngstown’s Cyrano Clay of Youngstown’s United City Boxing decisioned Bruce Moore of Cleveland in a heavyweight battle.
“He was a big guy and very strong, but my left jab was what I relied on and that really worked for me,” Clay said. “He couldn’t dance with me so I had to outbox him if I expected to win.”
In a super heavyweight pairing, Vince Hadley (37-3), also of the South Side Boxing Club scored a three-round decision over Cleveland’s Marlon Stein.
In a 150-pound clash, Davon Johnson of Cleveland defeated Dave Quarzo of Columbus.
Daywaun Roseberry, also of Cleveland, stopped fellow Clevelander David Rodriguez in a 152 pound pairing.
All eyes were on Roseberry as he knocked Rodriguez to the canvas in both the second and third rounds.
“He had the height advantage but I felt like I had the better open punch,” Roseberry said.
In a 141-pound battle, Thomas Mattice of Cleveland improved to 52-10 with a decision over Mike Goins of Columbus while Youngstown’s Vic Toney had the upperhand on Cleveland’s Jose Rodriguez in a 165 pound matchup.
In a 152-pound pairing, Lavelle Hadley, Vince’s brother, dropped a close decision to Pittsburgh’s C.C. Clark.
