YSU volleyball team falls to Valparaiso

Third-seeded Valparaiso hit .250 as a team and closed each set strong in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 victory over sixth-seeded Youngstown State in a quarterfinal match at the Horizon League volleyball tournament.

Youngstown State finished its best season in 13 years with at 15-14 record.

Shannon Watson had 12 kills and just one error in 23 attempts for YSU to post a match-best .478 attack percentage.

Alexis Egler added eight kills, and all-league player Missy Hundelt posted seven to go along with 15 digs.

YSU’s Erika West led all players with 18 digs.

Southside boxing has Thanksgiving show

The Southside Boxing Club will present its annual “Thanksgiving Feast” amateur boxing show today at St. Lucy’s Banquet Hall in Campbell.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight at 7.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $25 for ringside.

The 15-bout card is headlined by Alejandro “Popo” Salinas of Youngstown against Romero Hernandez, a native of Mexico who now lives in Cleveland.

Aldridge recognized

Peyton Aldridge, a student at LaBrae High School, will be recognized as one of the 10 national finalists for the inaugural U.S. Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence.

The ceremony will take place in the LaBrae High School gymnasium on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Presenting the award will be Maj. Gen. Jefforey Smith, commander, U.S. Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox; Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz; and Pro Football Hall of Fame CEO George Veras.

OHSAA Foundation Service Week Project

The Youngstown Christian boys and girls basketball teams will play the Struthers High boys and girls at the Struthers Fieldhouse on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The preview will be part of the OHSAA Foundation Service Week Project.

Senior tournament, Sweeper scheduled

The Youngstown Senior Bowling Tournament season kicks off this weekend beginning with a team event today and Sunday, then continuing Nov. 24-25, with both weekends at Boardman Lanes.

The Senior Mixed Doubles tournament will be Dec. 8-9 and Dec. 15-16 at West Side Lanes.

Miyazato shoots 64, leads at Titleholders

NAPLES, Fla.

Ai Miyazato of Japan kept telling herself to be patient and the putts would start falling. It all came together Friday at the Titleholders, where she felt as if she couldn’t miss until her final putt dropped for an 8-under 64 and a one-shot lead.

Two big birdie runs gave Miyazato a good chance to finish off the year with her third win. She finished the front nine with four birdies in a five-hole stretch, then ran off three straight birdies on the back nine at The TwinEagles Club.

Miyazato was at 10-under 134, one shot clear of U.S. Women’s Open Na Yeon Choi, who also felt comfortable with the putter.

Miss Valentine takes Big A’s Dream Stakes

Miss Valentine rallied from last to beat Beautiful But Blue, the 6-5 favorite, by 11/4 lengths on Friday in the $78,400 Chase the Dream Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

Joel Rosario guided the 4-year-old trained by Christophe Clement to her sixth win in 17 starts.
