Veterans dinner

The eighth annual Hispanic Veterans Appreciation dinner will take place Saturday at OCCHA Hall, 3660 Shirley Road, beginning at 6, with dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Lt. Col. Benjamin Rivera, deputy commander of the 911th Maintenance Group in Coraopolis, Pa., will speak. Rivera is a graduate of Youngstown East High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in environment civil-engineering science from Youngstown State University.

Garage fire

HOWLAND

Personnel from several fire departments assisted Howland firefighters at a garage fire at 3529 Basswood Ave. NE on Tuesday night. Departments from Bazetta, Champion and the Youngstown Air Reserve Station helped extinguish the fire. It took 21/2 hours to extinguish the fire and complete overhaul operations, Howland firefighters said.

The fire, reported at 7:09 p.m., caused about $25,000 damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Basswood is off of North River Road near North Park Avenue.

Business reopens

BOARDMAN

The Great Harvest Bread Co. at 7684 Market St. reopened Wednesday after sustaining damage when a 79-year-old woman crashed through the business Nov. 4.

Boardman police had said Mary R. Scott, 79, of New Middletown, was pulling into a parking space outside the bakery’s double doors when she went over the curb and hit the building.

Police records indicate that Scott was not cited for the accident. The bakery had been closed for repairs since the accident.

Talk scheduled about war on drugs

NILES

Patrick Nightingale, a former prosecutor and current member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, will talk about the War on Drugs at a 7 p.m. today at Perkins Restaurant, 1953 Niles-Cortland Road.

LEAP is an international organization of criminal justice professionals who believe current drug policies are ineffective. LEAP seeks a tight system of legalized regulation of drugs, which it says will “cripple the violent cartels and street dealers who control the current illegal market.”
