YSU festival seeks entries for public art project

YOUNGSTOWN

The Summer Festival of the Arts is again collaborating with Art Youngstown to produce and exhibit a public art project titled “Twenty-Twelve Flags.”

Because 2012 is an election year, artists are invited to create a flag design, which will be displayed during Youngstown State University’s Summer Festival of the Arts on July 7 and 8. The flags will be affixed to the trunks of trees throughout the campus.

“Our collaboration with Art Youngstown in doing a public art project during the Summer Festival of the Arts is a key component of the event,” said Lori A. Factor, SFA coordinator.

“It’s exciting to see the many interpretations of the theme and how each artist creates their artwork, and it’s becoming a nice tradition.”

Artists are asked to come up with an original design for a flag that best promotes themselves, their family crest, a state, country, school, university, feelings, business/organization, etc.

The medium is a 2-foot-by 3-foot canvas, vertically oriented, which will be supplied by Art Youngstown.

Artists are encouraged to use recycled or repurposed materials.

There is no fee to participate. Artists must be 16 years or older and can be professional or amateur.

Pre-registration is required; email Factor at lafactor@ysu.edu or call 330-941-3105.

Material pick-up time has been set for next Thursday and June 8 at YSU’s Bliss Hall, near the University Theater box office, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
