Vindy champ misspells big word at national bee

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Max Lee, who won the Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, erred in the fifth round today by misspelling “resveratrol.”

Max had spelled the word as “resviritrol.” He will not advance to the spelling bee finals.

Resveratrol is a type of natural phenol, produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.

Max, 12, a Canfield Middle School seventh-grader, is the son of Dr. Tac and Linglan Liu Lee. Forty-one of the 50 semi-finalists advanced to the fifth round which is ongoing. The competition started with 278 contestants.

Those advancing to the finals compete tonight to determine a champion.
