Ohio State’s second ‘corpse flower’ blooms

COLUMBUS

A rare rain-forest plant that’s known as a “corpse flower” because of its odor has bloomed at an Ohio State University greenhouse.

The school says the more than 5-foot-tall plant gave off the smell of rotting flesh as it bloomed over the weekend in Columbus.

Visitors had to act fast to catch a glimpse or a whiff of it, as the brief bloom started to open Friday evening and faded by Saturday night.

Such blooms are rare. The greenhouse coordinator has been growing the plants for a decade, and last year was the first time one of them bloomed.

It was nicknamed “Woody,” after Buckeyes football coach Woody Hayes. The new bloom is called “Jesse” to honor Ohio State track star and Olympian Jesse Owens.

Streaker at Cardinals game says he lost a bet

ST. LOUIS

A streaker who ran naked onto the field during a Cardinals game says he did so because he lost a bet.

Twenty-two-year-old Collin Grundstrom of Jefferson City was captured at Busch Stadium after shedding his clothes before the start of the seventh inning of the May 24 game. Officers retrieved his shorts from the stands and made him put them back on before leading him away.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Grundstrom is charged with violating two city ordinances — being a spectator running on the playing field and lewd and lascivious behavior. He was jailed overnight.

The head of security at the stadium, Joe Walsh, said Grundstrom “appeared to have been drinking.”
