The Salvation Army of Mahoning County will have its 2012 annual civic dinner next Tuesday at The Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Road. Carol J. Bigelow, Sam Covelli and Dale Sheely Jr. will be honored for their outstanding commitment to service in the Mahoning Valley.

Jim Loboy of WYTV will serve as master of ceremonies, and Youngstown State University President Dr. Cynthia Anderson will be the keynote speaker. Individual tickets cost $60. Those interested in being a Shield to the Community through donation or ticket purchase should call 330-746-8403.

Wick Park seeks votes for contest

The city’s parks and recreation department is urging people to vote for the North Side’s Wick Park in a national contest to win the title of America’s Favorite Park.

The three parks that receive the most votes by July 15 will be awarded grants: $100,000 for first place, $50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third place. Also, a $15,000 grant will be awarded randomly to another park that finishes in one of the remaining top 25 spots. The money is used to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in parks.

The contest is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co. and was developed with the National Park Foundation, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association.

Young women sought for pageant

Young women of Italian heritage age 16 to 24 may participate in the 2012 Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant at the 26th annual Greater Youngstown Italian Festival planned for Aug. 3-5 along Federal Plaza.

The pageant will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 3 on the main stage in front of the former Phar-Mor building.

Steel Valley Super Nationals planned

The annual Stadium GM Superstore Steel Valley Super Nationals will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 22, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 23, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 24 at Quaker City Motorsports Park.

Three thousand high-end hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, custom trucks, sport compacts and motorcycles will be part of the event, event organizers said.
