YMHA to highlight Brier Hill Annex

YOUNGSTOWN

A ribbon-cutting and open house will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at 263 DuPont St. for the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority’s newly renovated, 82-unit Brier Hill Annex apartment community. U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan and Mayor Charles Sammarone will be among the speakers. The first residents moved into the complex May 17. It had been closed for a year for the $10 million renovation designed to turn the complex into a green, energy-efficient community.

United Local meeting

HANOVERTON

The United Local Board of Education will meet in special session at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library. The purpose is to hire a new superintendent, according to the official meeting notice.

Library finalists

YOUNGSTOWN

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will conduct a public forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the main library, 305 Wick Ave., to introduce the five finalist candidates to succeed the retiring Carlton Sears as director of the 16-branch system. Library trustees will have a special meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday at the main library to consider a recommendation from the search committee for a new director.

Transit of Venus

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University’s Ward Beecher Planetarium on Lincoln Avenue behind Jones Hall will feature one-hour, full-dome public presentations concerning The Transit of Venus at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. During the actual transit, which begins at 6 p.m. June 5, planetarium staff will have filtered telescopes set up at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield for safe public viewing. All of the events are free, and no reservations are required. During the transit, the planet Venus will appear as a black dot crossing the face of the sun as Venus passes directly between the earth and the sun. The next Transit of Venus will be in 2117. East Palestine

The East Palestine Firefighters Association will have a memorial service at 6 p.m. June 6 at the Clark Street Fire Station, 67 E. Clark St. All are welcome to attend.
