Niles couple mark golden year with family and trips

Joseph and Carol Smaltz of Niles are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their wedding with a variety of activities throughout the year which have included a trip to Washington, D.C. in April, and a dinner with family and friends in May. Upcoming events are the renewal of their wedding vows in June at St. Columba Cathedral, a lamb roast at their home in August, and a trip in September to attend the St. Gennaro Festival in New York.

Mr. Smaltz and the former Carol Uhrin were married May 5, 1962, at St. Mary Church in Warren.

The couple have three sons, David of Warren, and Tom and Joe, both of Niles, and two daughters, Anne Marie (David) Hanlon of Murrysville, Pa., and Julie (Michael) Romanus of South Park, Pa. The family includes three grandsons.

Mrs. Smaltz, a homemaker, was formerly employed as an administrative assistant at General Motors Packard Electric. She holds a real estate license and is a trustee for the Niles McKinley Memorial Public Library.

Mr. Smaltz played professional football for the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers. A graduate of John Carroll University, he is a former employee and franchise owner of Arby’s. He served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain.

The couple are members of St. Stephen Church in Niles.
