English degree

Patrick Alexander, formerly of Boardman, has received his doctorate in English from Duke University.

He is a 2002 graduate of Boardman High School and graduated summa cum laude in 2006 from Miami University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English/creative writing.

Alexander has accepted a position as an associate professor of English and African-American Studies at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. He is the son of Dale and Dwendolyn Alexander of Boardman.

SCOUTS

Eagle award

An Eagle Scout court-of-honor ceremony is set for next Sunday for Gary Haddle, son of Bob and Debbie Haddle of Poland. He is a member of Troop 44, which meets at Poland Presbyterian Church and is led by Scoutmaster Bob Zedaker.

Gary has earned 23 merit badges and served as troop quartermaster, assistant patrol leader, senior patrol leader and troop guide. He has earned his religious God and Country award, achieved his Fifth-year Pipestone, which is an honors award at Seven Ranges Boy Scout Camp, and is a member of the Order of The Arrow.

His Eagle Scout service project was to benefit Faith Community Church in Youngstown, where he led and organized his fellow Scouts, friends and family in the construction of a memorial garden on the church’s property. He secured donations of supplies and materials as well as had fundraisers to complete his project.

Gary is a junior at Poland Seminary High School, where he is an honor student and is enrolled in advanced classes. He is a member of the National Honor Society, marching band, wind ensemble and the speech and debate team, where he has competed in state and national competition. He also has participated in Model UN at Youngstown State University.
