Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs Inc., hosted its annual awards and scholarship presentation at a luncheon at the Youngstown Country Club.

YAFWC, affiliated with both the Ohio and General Federation of Women’s clubs, Inc., presented the awards during a noon gathering May 16. Wimodaughsis Club furnished the table centerpieces, and Elva Easton gave the meditation. Sean Baran, a graduate of YSU’s Dana School of Music, provided music for the event.

Rebecca Soldan received a $2,000 Youngstown State University scholarship, which Judy Robinson presented. Soldan, majoring in social work, is a nontraditional YSU student who will graduate in the spring of 2013. She plans to become a licensed social worker, then pursue a master’s degree in social work at YSU.

Soldan has maintained Dean’s List status every semester with a 4.0 grade point average. Her dedication to her academic record, hard work and persistence in reaching her goals make her a worthy recipient of the scholarship.

Other members of the committee are Valorie Zurawick, chairwoman; Patty Higgins, Mary B. Smith and Barbara Geller.

Stan Boney was introduced and honored by Barbara Higgins for his outstanding work in television and his commitment to the Mahoning Valley.

Boney began his career at WYTV in 1979 as a weekend sports anchor. In 1981 he moved to the position of weather anchor, a post he held for 30 years. In 2008 he began anchoring the station news, and in 2011 he became the main anchor of 33 News at 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m.

Boney has been the host of WYTV’s “Academic Challenge” since 2003 and has hosted the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon to benefit muscular dystrophy.

He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in broadcast journalism. Boney is well-known for his storytelling and his regular feature stories on people, places and historical events around Youngstown. The newsman often can be seen at community events, donating his time to raise money for charities.
