DIVISION I TRACK Boardman’s Hadley, Silvestri advance


vBoardman High School sophomore Mark Hadley broke a 26-year-old school record in the 3200-meter run at Friday’s Division I regional meet at Austintown Fitch, and qualified for the OHSAA state track and field championship on Friday. Hadley finished second in the race in a time of 9 minutes, 20.2 seconds. The old school record of 9:21.8 was held by Tim Grady since 1986. Hadley, who shaved more than 17 seconds off his previous season-best time, finished just behind Nicholas Pupino of Copley, a senior, who crossed the finish line in 9:17.92. Nick Elswick of Chardon and Rob Scanlon of Brecksville-Broadview Heights also qualified.

vAlso, Boardman junior Giovanna Silvestri placed third at the regional by throwing 119 feet, 9 inches in the discus. Silvestri, who won the district championship with a throw of 111-11, earned her first trip to the state meet, next Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus. Solon sophomore Alexis Gray won the event with a throw of 135-2, and Willoughby South senior Maria Romano was second (128-6). Maple Heights junior Sharhonda Rowell also qualified with a throw of 118-9.
