Wick Park supporters seek votes in contest

The city’s parks and recreation department is urging people to vote for the North Side’s Wick Park in a national contest to win the title of America’s Favorite Park.

The three parks that receive the most votes by July 15 will be awarded grants: $100,000 for first place, $50,000 for second place, and $25,000 for third place. Also, a $15,000 grant will be awarded randomly to a park that finishes in one of the remaining top 25 spots.

The money is used to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in parks.

The contest is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co. and was developed with the National Park Foundation, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association.

Car-seat checkups today in Boardman

In a study about child - restraint systems, approximately 73 percent of car seats showed at least one critical misuse, according to Safe Kids USA. To reduce this number and promote child-passenger safety, technicians from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Safe Kids Mahoning Valley will provide free car seat check today.

The checks will be done from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sweeney Chevrolet at 8010 Market St.

“Child restraints and seat belts, when installed and used properly, can prevent injuries and save lives,” said Gia Ramsey, injury prevention specialist, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Health Fair on the Square is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. June 2 on Courthouse Square by Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church Nursing Guild and Trumbull County African American Achievers Association.

The event will include screenings for blood pressure, bone density, vision, foot and lead as well as stroke-risk assessment. There also will be health information, face painting for children, door prizes and other giveaways.

Participating agencies are Access Health Mahoning Valley, Action Ambulance, Akron Children’s Hospital Sickle Cell Program, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Beary Ann the Clown, CareSource, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Kent State University at Trumbull, Ohio KePro, podiatrist Dr. Frederick Perry, Sam’s Club, Small Smiles, St. Elizabeth Cancer Center, St. Elizabeth Mobile Dental Clinic, Trumbull County Health Department, Trumbull County Neighborhood Partnership, United Healthcare Community Plan, ValleyCare Health System Wound Center, Warren City health and fire departments, Warren Urban Minority Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Outreach Program, Youngstown Office on Minority Health and gastroenterologist Dr. Adel Youssef.

Meeting planned

POLAND

Township trustees will have an informational meeting about extending natural-gas lines to the general area of Quarry, Stymie and Lowellville roads.

The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. June 6 at the township government center, 3339 Dobbins Road. Debra Mettle, coordinator of engineering design support services for Dominion East Ohio Gas, has been invited to the meeting to answer questions about the project.
