Dobbins fourth-graders recently brought home big prizes for their school from the Eastern Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (EOCTM) competition on April 28.

The competition at Fitch High School, which hosted 800 area students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, tested students on accuracy and difficulty in five different areas. Students tested their prowess in geometry, number and number relations, data analysis and probability, calculator and word problems, and mental arithmetic.

At the close of the event, two students in each area were honored for their excellence and five Dobbins students earned top prizes.

Chase Wern and Ava Izenour earned first- and second-place, respectively, in geometry; Ashlin Rabindra took first in calculator and word problems; Tyler Berry earned a first-place finish in number relations; and Jared Tucker took the second-place prize for mental arithmetic.

Fourth-grade teacher Elaine Morlan said the students put in many extra hours of practice for the competition.

“We offer math enrichment lessons after school and the group all attended. EOCTM is a great competition to be a part of because it follows what they learn in fourth grade and enriches it,” Morlan explained.

Morlan offers the option to participate in extra math programs and competitions to keep the subject exciting for her fourth-graders.

“You don’t perform a skit or speak to a large group of people in this subject, but through projects like EOCTM, the students are learning to be both accurate and quick. This will serve them well as they further their studies in mathematics,” Morlan added.
