The cafeteria of Stadium Drive Elementary School, decorated with pink, yellow and green balloons, overflowed with anxious kindergarten students and proud mothers May 11 during the school’s annual Mother’s Day appreciation breakfast.

The theme of the day was “Mothers Can.” The event included kindergartners eating breakfast with their mothers and a mother-student storytime.

Kim DeFabio, mother of 6-year-old Samantha, was pleased with the outcome of the event. “I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” she said.

Samantha was enthusiastic about the celebration and even decided to wear a navy blue shirt, blue jeans and black shoes like her mother in honor of the breakfast.

“She wanted to dress alike so we had to wear the same shirt, the same shoes and she’s excited to celebrate Mother’s Day,” DeFabio said.

The breakfast was also a way for teachers to appreciate their students’ mothers as well, according to kindergarten teacher Tami Nero.

“[It’s] just to show our appreciation for the mothers. They do so much for my students,” Nero said.

Each student surprised their mother with personalized booklets compiled with dozens of stories, poems and pictures they created while they ate.

According to Nero, the breakfast not only allowed students to celebrate Mother’s Day, but also gave them an opportunity to enhance their literacy skills for first grade next fall.

“I have the kids do some writing, poems and different things just to incorporate some skills that they’ll be doing in the first grade,” Nero said.
