Poland native David Wilson Peck graduated May 5 from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Peck earned a bachelor’s degree in History.

Poland resident earns honors

Holly Massuccio of Poland has been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at Youngstown State University. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Bonding with babies and books

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for babies 6-23 months on June 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s on June 7 at 10:30 a.m. The program will include devlopmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 2-3, become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun Times for 4s and 5s

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Smart Money Fun Times for 4s and 5s on June 7 at 1 p.m. The program will include smart money stories, rhymes and songs for children ages 4-5. Families will also enjoy activities that encourage financial literacy on one of the library’s Smart Money: Fun Finances Stations. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Poland library is hosting a Zombie Prom on June 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. for teens in grades 7-12. Door prizes and prizes for the best zombie prom king and zombie queen will be awarded. Feel free to come in costume. Starting June 1 you can register to attend by calling 330-744-8636.

Stuffed animal sleepover

The Poland library will host a stuffed animal sleepover on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. Join us for stories and fun before leaving your special friend to spend the night in the library. Come back the next morning at 10 a.m. for doughnuts and juice to pick up your friend and find out what fun adventures they had after you left. Parents, make sure this special friend is one your child will be able to sleep without for the night. For ages 3 and up. Sign up is required.

Wearing your helmet could get you ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children. During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

McGuffey Historical Society hosts special guest

The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, based in Boardman, will host McGuffey descendant, Shirley Eckley, as a guest speaker at the society’s June 9 meeting at 1 p.m. at the Kravitz Deli, located in the Poland library, Eckley, a retired Youngstown City Schools’ teacher and resident of Hubbard, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.

McGuffey is known as “America’s Schoolmaster” and was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey Society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies, which once numbered 100,000 members nationwide.

Dining with Diabetes series set

A three-week Dining with Diabetes series of classes will be held June 6, 13 and 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley, 301 W. Western Reserve Road. The program is sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension, Mahoning County and Shepherd of the Valley.

The class is open to diabetics, their family members and caretakers. Those enrolled will be taught how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to make and delicious. They also will learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise and how to understand diabetes-related medical tests.

The Extension office reminds the public that diabetes is a serious and costly disease. But research has shown that those who learn to manage blood sugar levels eat healthy and exercise regularly can lower the risk of complications and lead a more productive life.

Recipe books and diabetes brochures will be provided. The cost is $30 and preregistration is required by June 1. Registration can be made by calling the extension office at 330-533-5538.

Tesone named to Dean’s List

Nick Tesone was named to the Dean’s List with a 4.0 GPA at the University of Dayton for both the fall and spring semester. A 2011 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Tesone is majoring in chemical engineering. He is also a member of the UD marching band, pep band and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity.

Home furnishing consignment store opens

Re Arrangements, a home furnishing consignment store, had its grand opening May 1 at 15 Stadium Dr. in Boardman. The store officially opened April 1 and specializes in gently-used furniture and home d cor.

The family business is owned by Lexy Milton and Adam Witzeman. The store accepts gently-used furniture and home decor in “like new” condition.

Wound Care center relocates

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient to Route 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.

St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.

The staff consists of physicians who specialize in the treatment of chronic wounds, nurses specially trained to care for patients with these wounds, and experienced technicians.

Italian Fest to be in August

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest will be held on Aug. 3-5 in downtown Youngstown. The festival is now accepting applications for the Italian Man and Woman of the Year. Applications for scholarships are also available. Applicants must be attending Youngstown State University in order to be eligible for these scholarships. Deadline for applications is June 1.
