The motto of the United States Marine Corps is “Semper Fi” which translates to “Always Faithful.” A group of local Marines were indeed faithful to their appointment to visit Union Elementary on May 9.

The servicemen who visited the school arrived in style on a military jeep and humvee, which immediately piqued the interest of students as they pulled into the school’s parking lot.

By grade level, Union students were welcomed out to the vehicles and were invited to take a look around.

The Marines let students try on heavy helmets and vests and explained how the gear would help them during wartime. Students piled in the back of the military jeep, and jumped in the driver’s seat in both vehicles.

The horn of the Marine’s humvee was beeped a few times during the activity, which elicited surprise and laughter from fellow students below.

Union principal Mike Masucci said the visit was a way for his students to continue honoring veterans and servicemen.

“For Veteran’s Day, every student in the school writes a letter to a man or woman who has sacrificed for our country and they thank them for that service. Today was a great way for the students to learn, in a real way, more about what Marines do to protect and serve us,” he explained.

Students from Union Preschool were also welcomed to look around, and teacher Linda DeLost noted another plus of the visit.

“Meeting the soldiers was really thrilling, and they had a whole lot of fun,” she added.
