Lynn Kirk Elementary School’s first-graders all got a chance to share their imagination with their teachers, family members and friends during the school’s Young Author’s Tea May 11.

“Each student writes a book over Spring Break. We gave them a rough draft format and them and their families come up with an idea of what they want their story to be about, They bring their rough draft to school and we work with the kids. We transfer their book into an actual hardbound book,” said first-grade teacher Molly Walsh.

Tales of wild bunny adventures and princess journeys kept everyone entertained as the crowd listened to each first-grader read.

“It’s wonderful,” said Heather Medred, whose daughter Sophia participated.

Walsh said the event helps students improve their writing skills.

“I think it’s important because in first grade they’re just learning how to write complete sentences, and then now at the end of first grade, they’ve grown so much that they know how to put a story together,” Walsh said. David Sherwood, father of first-grader Lauren, was impressed with his daughter’s work.

“She is a very creative person and she has come a long way,” he said.

First-grade teacher Carli Cramer said the event helps students become more comfortable reading aloud.

“It’s given them the courage to sit up in front of someone and read,” she added.
