Lloyd Elementary second-grade students impressed an audience full of teachers and parents with their theatrical skills and knowledge during the school’s “Famous Ohioans event May 16.
Each student was required to stand in front of hundreds of parents and teachers and recite a 30-minute speech they wrote themselves about who they were dressed as.
“It was a wonderful learning experience for them,” said third-grade teacher Pam Percy.
Students were also required to research four other people from Ohio as part of their project.
“Next year when they’re in third grade they study history and we would like them to have some exposure,” said Percy.
Fearless second-graders dressed as characters like Johnny Appleseed, Annie Oakley, Steven Speilberg and many other famous people from Ohio and graced the stage with props and enthusiasm. Amelia Kemp, 9, who was Lucretia Garfield enjoyed participating in the event.
“I learned that Lucretia Garfield was a very important person in our country,” Kemp said.
Parents were proud of their children and smiled throughout the entire event. Calvin Roby, father of second-grade student Corbin Roby, was pleased with his son’s effort.
“He did really well,” said Roby.
The event was also a way to improve students’ public speaking skills, according to Percy.
Calvin Roby said this event was important because it familiarizes students with public speaking at an early age, which will help them when they get into high school.
