Compco wins in Boardman Community Baseball play

Compco Industries defeated RC & Sons 11-6 on May 12 in Boardman Community Baseball, Minor AA. action.

Compco’s offense was led by Johnny Murphy (two hits, double) and Tommy Fryda (two hits, run scored). Andrew Fryda and Ben Ludban each added singles in the bottom of the third inning. Jack McGlone walked and scored twice.

Compco’s pitching was led by Johnny Murphy and Tommy Fryda, who combined to allow six runs.

Compco earns one-run victory

Compco Industries defeated Mayo & Associates 5-4 on May 14 in a Boardman Community Baseball, Minor AA contest. Tommy Fryda had one hit and scored a run. Johnny Murphy, Anthony Butto, Jaden Rivera and Andrew Fryda each walked and scored. Compco’s pitching was led by Andrew Fryda and Owen Lewis, who combined to allow four runs.

Boardman track team members earn league honors

Several members of the Boardman boys track team earned Federal League honors recently, including Mark Hadley, who was named League MVP.

Hadley was named First Team in the 1600 and 3200 events. Nathan Jones made the First Team in the 100. Brian Bodrick was on the Federal League Second Team in the 200 and joined by teammates Alan Burns (800 and 1600) and Allen Starkey (long jump).

Boardman athletes listed as honorable mention choices are Will Birchfield (11o hurdles), Brian Bodrick (4x100 relay), Turel Thompson (4x100 relay), Starkey (4x100 relay) and Nathan Jones (4x100 relay).

New school records were set this season in the 4x100 relay in a time of 42.14 and in 400 by Dayne Hammond in 49.20. The boys team finished second overall in the Federal League.

Youth team improves to 8-0

Compco Industries improved to 8-0 after defeating Phantom Fireworks 17-10 on May 17.

Johnny Murphy (two hits, triple), Tommy Fryda (double) and Owen Lewis (double) led the offense. Noah and A.J. Pecchia each added a hit and scored twice. Compco’s pitching was led by Johnny Murphy, Anthony Butto, Tommy Fryda and Owen Lewis.

Boardman baseball players named to all-league teams

In addition to winning the 2012 Federal League team title, the Boardman baseball team placed several players on the all-league team. The group was led by Danny Popio, who was named Federal League Player of the Year. Popio and Troy Parks were named to the First Team and Derek Pasquale and Nico DiIanni were on the Second Team. Honorable mentions went to Anthony Pascella, Cameron Rogers and Phil DiIanni.

Nathan Knaus, Jude Koury, Anthony Pacella, Derek Pasquale and Cameron Rogers were named to the Federal League All-Academic Team.

Boardman baseball improves record

Boardman’s Mike Witte improved his record to 3-2 with a complete game three-hitter that helped the Spartans clinch at least a share for their second straight Federal League championship. Witte struck out three and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Dan Watkins led Boardman offensively with two hits and two RBIs.

On May 12, during Boardman’s second game, Nate Knaus pithched a complete game to earn his second win of the year as the Spartans defeated Liberty on Senior Day at Spartan Field. All 13 seniors participated in the team victory with the winning run being scored by Dan Watkins on a sac fly by Nico DiIanni. DiIanni led the Spartan’s offense going two for two with a double and an RBI.

Boardman baseball loses to Canton McKinley

Boardman dropped its second Federal League contest of the year to Canton McKinley Friday by a score of 10-2. Dan Watkins got the loss going 2 2/3 innings. Aaron Dill pitched the remaining 3 1/3 innings. Offensively for the Spartans, Cameron Rogers and Anthony Pacella each had two hits.

‘Boom Boom’ Mancini biography planned

A biography on Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini called “The Good Son” is scheduled to be released in September. The book is written by Mark Kriegel, who also wrote bestselling biographies on “Pistol” Pete Maravich and Joe Namath.
