Boardman Shepherd of the Valley employees had permission to goof off at work during the facility’s Clown Parade May 14. The event kicked off a week-long celebration in honor of National Nursing Home Week.

“Each day we do something different,” said Karen Lambert, STNA coordinator.

Activities Director Kim Osbourne said the parade provided a unique way to honor National Nursing Home Week.

“It’s a special week to recognize everything that’s going on here at the facility and we can have special events planned for residents,” Osbourne explained.

There were a total of seven events during the week, according to Osbourne, which included a spaghetti eating contest, a visit from animal entertainer Jungle Terry and more. The theme of the week was “Old Fashioned Carnival.”

There wasn’t a frown in sight as employees marched down the hallways handing out animal crackers. Some residents wished they could continue the celebration.

“I could do this every day,” said resident Lucille Vanallen.

Vanallen particularly enjoyed the parade because she used to collect clowns.

Lambert enjoyed the event because it was something exciting that gave residents cheer.

“They get a kick out of it,” Lambert said.
