Church hosts drive-through chicken dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, in Canfield will host a drive-through chicken dinner June 7 from 4 p.m. until sold out.

The dinner includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie for $7. Drive through to pick up a dinner.

Your vote is needed for Canfield postcard

The community is being asked to vote for their favorite Canfield postcard at the Canfield Historical Society’s Bond House June 2 between 1 and 4 p.m.

Canfield school district third-graders, led by teacher Jenny Beil at Hilltop Elementary, and teacher Heidi Snyder at CH Campbell Elementary, will be designing and illustrating the postcards as a culminating project for their study of the Canfield community.

The winner of the postcard contest will win a basket filled with Canfield gift certificates, original vintage Canfield postcards and more.

Admission to the Canfield Historical Society’s Bond House is free. The Bond House is located at 44 W. Main Street, Canfield, directly across from the Canfield library.

Canfield Baccalaureate set for June 7

A Baccalaureate ceremony for members of the senior class of Canfield High School and their parents will be June 7 inside the high school auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. The program is meant to be a non-denominational celebration of the Class of 2012 and will include inspirational messages and music prepared and organized by members of the senior class.

The Canfield library invites teens in grades 7-12 to stop by the library this month to take a turn building a word in our Words with Friends game. The library will post the highest word scores.

This program is going on during library hours through the month of June.

Join a book club at the library

Canfield library is welcoming kids to join the fifth and sixth-grade book club on June 14 at 11 a.m. It’s your chance to meet new friends, learn about some great reads and exchange ideas on the latest books.

Discover how mad science can be

The Canfield library will host Dr. Weirdo and children of all ages can discover how magical science can be on June 20 at 10 a.m. This program is presented by Mad Science of Northeast Ohio. Refreshments will be served.

The Canfield library will host a blood pressure check on June 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. The check will be provided by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association.

Wearing your bike helmet could get you free ice cream

The Boardman Optimists, Boardman Dairy Queen and Boardman Police are sponsoring a Bike Helmet Safety program this summer for Valley children.

During June, July and August, officers will be handing out “sweet citations” to children seen wearing their bike helmets. These citations can be redeemed for a free small ice cream cone at the Boardman DQ, located at 6120 Market Street.

McGuffey Historical Society hosts special guest

The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, based in Boardman, will host McGuffey descendant, Shirley Eckley, as a guest speaker at the society’s June 9 meeting at 1 p.m. at the Kravitz Deli, located in the Poland library, Eckley, a retired Youngstown City Schools’ teacher and resident of Hubbard, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.

McGuffey is known as “America’s Schoolmaster” and was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey Society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies, which once numbered 100,000 members nationwide.

Diamondback hosts golfing courses

Diamonback will host courses for kids in grades fifth through eighth on June 12, 19, 26 and 27 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. College instructors from Youngstown State University and Ohio State University will be teaching the course. Lunch will be provided.

Canfield graduate named Equine Academy Director

Sarah Coleman has been named as the Director of the Equine Academy at Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Ky. An avid equestrian, Coleman grew up in Canfield and graduated from the Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens in 2002.

She comes to the Equine Academy at Lexington Catholic after being the director of the Equine Scholars Program at Georgetown College for four years and working as a managing editor for multiple equine and farming-related publications based in Lexington. She currently shows her off-the-track Thoroughbred, Bayou Brass, in the 3-foot hunter division.

Coleman will officially begin her position June 1. She is a 1998 graduate of Canfield High School.

Watt named to Dean’s List

Margaret Watt of Canfield has been named to the Spring 2012 Dean’s High Honors List at Marietta College. Watt, a graduate of Canfield High School, is majoring in Biochemistry at Marietta.

Canfield grad earns scholarship

Nicholas Reinthaler, a sophomore biochemistry major, will receive a Clyde A. Armstrong Memorial Scholarship. He is a graduate of Canfield High School and the son of Joseph and Linda Reinthaler.

Canfield grad accepts internship

Kedron Taylor, a 2009 graduate of Canfield High School, has accepted an internship with Disney World for the 2012/2013 fall semester. She is currently a junior in the Scripps School of Communications at Ohio University. She is the daughter of Terence and Gia Taylor and the granddaughter of Joseph and Barbara Caruss and Margaret Taylor, all of Canfield.

The Canfield library will host Baby Brilliant: Fun Time for 4s and 5s on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 4-5, become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Pharmacy opens Canfield location on Village Green

Pharmacy Care, a full-service pharmacy, has opened a new location on the Village Green in Canfield. Pharmacist Dan Wearsch and his staff are located at 11 East Main Street in Canfield in the former Nationwide building.

Pharmacy Care’s services include a complete specialty compounding lab, service and convenient parking.

The facility is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wound Care center relocates

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient toRoute 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.

St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.
