AMS student qualifies in Greatest Golfer competition

Austintown Middle School eighth-grader Joe Shushock finished second in his age division and qualified to the next level of The Vindicator’s The Greatest Golfer of the Valley tournament. Qualifying round was played May 20 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Little Falcons sponsoring golf outing

The Austintown Little Falcons will sponsor its annual Golf Outing tomorrow at Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard.

The event will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m.

Cost is $70 per golfer. It will be a four-person scramble. Cost includes 18 holes, cart, breakfast, lunch and dinner provided by O’Donold’s Pub, beverages, a 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction, Skins Game, hole-in-one prizes, as well as other hole and team prizes. Every golfer gets a free $50 online gift card.

All proceeds will benefit Austintown Little Falcons Youth Football and Cheerleading Programs.

Austintown church hosts annual 5K race

Immaculate Heart of Mary church in Austintown will sponsor a 5K Festival Fun Run on June 7. The event is an evening run that starts at 7 p.m.

There is a short, about 1/4 mile kids run for those in sixth grade or under that takes place just before the start of the 5K. All runners must be registered to participate. Advance registration is $13 for the 5K fun run. Race day registration is $15. The kids run has no entry fee, but all kids must register to run.

‘Boom Boom’ Mancini biography planned

A biography on Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini called “The Good Son” is scheduled to be released in September. The book is written by Mark Kriegel, who also wrote bestselling biographies on “Pistol” Pete Maravich and Joe Namath. Mancini, who grew up on the South Side, was the WBA lightweight champion from 1982-84.
