The Trumbull Community Action Program (TCAP), 1230 Palmyra Road Sw, is scheduling appointments for its Summer Crisis Program, which runs June 1 through Aug. 31. Eligible applicants/households may qualify for one or a combination of the following: An air conditioner if no air conditioner was received from TCAP in 2009, 2010, or 2011 and/or a one-time payment for the electric bill not to exceed a total maximum benefit of $250.00.

Call 1-866-747-1041 Monday through Friday for an appointment. Twenty walk-in applicants will be seen Friday mornings. For income guidelines and other eligibility criteria, call TCAP at 330-393-2507 ext. 225.

Care package drive

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is having an Army Care Package Drive from Tuesday to June 1 to benefit troops. It will be led by Trumbull County native Lt. Terry Battison.

The troops need items such as toothpaste, baby wipes, shaving creams, snacks, soap, lip balm, bug spray, gold bond powder, deodorant, powdered drink mix, protein bars, T-shirts, socks, books, and games. Also, hand-written letters are encouraged. Items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Red Cross office at 661 Mahoning Ave. NW in Warren.

The Red Cross hopes to send 30 care packages to the troops. Monetary donations will be used to purchase additional supplies and for mailing expenses. For information, call 330-392-2551 ext. 119 . The Red Cross will not accept anything homemade, alcohol, chocolate, pork products, tobacco products, or magazines.

Child car-seat clinic

To reduce injuries and promote child-passenger safety, technicians from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Safe Kids Mahoning Valley are offering free car-seat checks Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sweeney Chevrolet, 8010 Market St., Boardman. Technicians also will discuss these guidelines and provide literature. Appointments are requested. Call 330-729-9254.

Alzheimer’s group to offer training

Niles

Foundations of Dementia Care, a comprehensive, three-part training module for health-care professionals and staff, is offered by The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area at the Area Agency on Aging District 11 offices on the second floor of the Eastwood Mall in Niles beginning Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. The second and third modules are on June 14 and 28. To register by the May 30 deadline and for information, call 1-800-272-3900.

The cost for all three sessions is $89, and nurses, social workers and counselors will receive six Continuing Education credits. The cost for a single session is $35, and participants will receive two credits.

Lifeguard classes

KINSMAN

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio is offering Red Cross lifeguard training at Camp Sugarbush, 6515 state Route 88, Kinsman, Monday through Saturday, June 4- 9. Weekday sessions are 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., and the training finishes with an all-day session Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fee of $300 includes all materials needed to complete the training, a participant manual and a CPR pocket mask.

The course is open to the public. Girl scouts should call for special pricing. To register, call Donna at 330-983-0437. Candidates must be strong swimmers and be able to demonstrate their skills to qualify for the training.
