Historical society sets speaker

POLAND

William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will host Shirley Eckley of Hubbard, a McGuffey descendant, as a guest speaker during the June 9 meeting in Kravitz Deli at the Poland Library, 311 S. Main St.

The program will begin at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.

Eckley, a retired teacher from Youngstown City Schools, will recite several stories, based upon the McGuffey Eclectic Readers’ themes of character, citizenship, conservation and the importance of literacy.

McGuffey, known as “America’s Schoolmaster,” was raised in the Mahoning Valley. The local McGuffey society is the last existing chapter of the National Federation of McGuffey Societies.
