Ohio starts highway rest area advertising program

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio officials want to help fund highway rest area maintenance and other transportation projects by allowing advertising and sponsorships at state rest stops and welcome centers.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says it spends up to $50 million annually to maintain the state’s 101 rest areas, including paying for utilities and janitorial services. The department says money generated from the advertising and sponsorship opportunities under the new program would help cover part of those expenses.

ODOT Director Jerry Wray says the revenue also could help pay for some of the major transportation construction projects that may be delayed because of funding shortfalls.

The department started seeking bids for the advertising and sponsorship program Monday.
