45K Race for the Cure

COLUMBUS

About 45,000 people gathred in downtown Columbus to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment.

The event Saturday marks 20 years for the Komen Race for the Cure in Columbus.

Organizers told The Columbus Dispatch that they expected about 5,000 fewer participants than they’ve had in the last two years.

The drop follows a move by Komen’s national leaders to end funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening that was soon reversed.

The race in Columbus raised $3.6 million last year. Most of that money goes toward educational programs, screening and treatment in central and southeast Ohio.
