High school bowlers receive money from youth association

Staff report

The Youngstown Youth Bowling Association scholarship committee announced its winners for a record $4000 in scholarships for 2012.

Seniors who are recipients are James Tancabel, Nick Gigax, Andrea Campbell, Samantha Dudley and Tiffany Lindberg.

Both Tancabel and Gigax were awarded $1000 scholarships.

Campbell will receive a $1000 scholarship, while Dudley and Lindberg will be awarded $500 scholarships.

Presentations will be today during the Youngstown Youth Bowling Association’s annual awards banquet at Mahoning Country Club at 2 p.m.

Tancabel will attend YSU to study towards a degree in mechanical engineering before heading to Case Western Reserve University for a masters degree in aerospace engineering.

Tancabel is first in his Boardman High School class of 380 students with a 4.0 GPA and was only absent 1.5 days during his high school career.

Like his attendance, the 18-year-old Tancabel didn’t miss many headpins, either. He was a four-year letterwinner with the Spartans, who won the Federal League bowling championship in 2009 when he was a freshman. In March, Boardman placed 15th at state.

The appearance in Columbus was a high school highlight.

“We had four seniors, so we wanted to go to have one last hurrah,” Tancabel said of himself, Zach Warchol, Mike Schafer and Matt Schafer. “We went as team and that’s how we wanted to get there, so I’m glad we could go and enjoy ourselves.”

The son of Jim and Kathy Tancabel is a National Honor Society member and plans to join the YSU bowling club team, which is coached by his high school coach, Brian Umstead.

Gigax will attend Walsh University to obtain a degree in physical therapy. Nick is also No. 1 in his Struthers High School class of 155 students with a 4.0 GPA. The National Honor Society member was also named to the all-league team for baseball.

Campbell, who will be entering the nursing program at Kent State, is ranked 18th in her Austintown Fitch class of 364 students with a 3.909 GPA. In addition to bowling, Andrea is also a member of the National Honor Society, French Club, Key Club and concert choir. She also played on the basketball team.

Dudley will attend Notre Dame College to major in accounting. Samantha, who held a 3.0 GPA at Hubbard High, is also a member of several clubs. In her senior year, Samantha was also co-captain for soccer and bowling and was captain of the softball team.

Lindberg will also enter the nursing program at Kent State. Tiffany has maintained a 3.75 GPA for her Austintown Fitch career and is ranked 45 out of 364 students. Lindberg is also an NHS member.
