GM to forgo ads during Super Bowl

DETROIT

General Motors says that it costs too much to advertise during the Super Bowl.

Marketing chief Joel Ewanick says the company won’t run ads during the big game in February.

Ewanick said in a statement Friday that GM can’t justify the expense because of a significant price increase for next year’s event.

The move comes as the company reviews its global advertising budget. GM spent about $4.5 billion on advertising last year.

The Super Bowl is advertising’s biggest stage. Companies spent an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second commercial during this year’s game.

Gas prices drop

If you’re lucky enough to live in some parts of the United States, you may see gas-pump prices fall to around $3.25 a gallon or less in the next week or two. Even West Coast drivers should get some relief from prices that still are above $4 a gallon.

Retail gasoline prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon Friday. That’s 22 cents less than the high of $3.94 per gallon reached in early April.

The lowest prices, from $3.39 to $3.51 per gallon, were in the South and parts of the Midwest.
