JFK’s Abdul-Aal, Lakeview doubles are state-bound in tennis

Warren JFK’s Jad Abdul-Aal and Lakeview’s doubles team of Zach McDivitt and Aaron Paczak have qualified for the Division II state tennis tournament.

Abdul-Aal and the Lakeview boys both won two matches in the district tournament on Friday at Weis Park courts.

Abdul-Aal opened with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Ben Moore of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. He then defeated Henry Grierson of Rocky River, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Abdul-Aal will play Billy Lennon of University School in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

Also in singles play, Mitch Maroscher of Salem won his first match, 6-0, 6-0, over Josh Wymyslo of Canton Central Catholic. Marsocher then lost to Lennon, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

Poland’s Garrett Grdner fell to Dhruv Yadav of Hawken, 6-3, 6-3, in a first-round match.

In doubles, McDivitt and Paczak defeated Ron Bellinson and Josh Rapkin of Orange, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round, then eliminated Colin Schmitz and Cole Ziegler of Fairview, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. They will play Siddarth Ahuja and Daniel Lubarsky of Hawken on Saturday morning.

In other doubles first-round matches, Jay Linam and Andre Pietrrazak of Salem lost to Dan Doan and Tyler Flickinger of Triway, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; Ryan Calcagni and David Shoffstall of Poland lost to Tyler Potts and Chase Krummel of Akron Hoban, 6-4, 6-4, and Tyler Cole and John Nader of JFK lost to Danny Huang and Lukas Zalesky of University School, 7-5, 6-1.

Huang-Zalesky will play Weston Noall and Mike Riley of Gilmour in the other semifinal.
