Union preschool students celebrated the women in their lives during the school’s annual Mother’s Day Tea on May 9.

Mothers, grandmothers, aunts or any special female friend were invited into Joy Bucci’s preschool classroom to watch performances, enjoy food and receive gifts handmade by the students.

The preschoolers performed a list of songs Bucci has perfected through many years of hosting the event, including tunes like “You are My Sunshine,” “The World is a Rainbow,” and The Temptations favorite “My Girl.”

Bucci’s students handled a new song during the event, entertaining with the tune “Build Me Up (Buttercup).”

“We have some traditional songs we sing during our tea, but ‘Buttercup’ was a new addition. The parents enjoyed it so much, I think it will become a new tradition for my students over the years ahead,” Bucci said.

The special women present at the event were offered hugs and handmade flowers during the performance.

As the singing ended and families settled in for a snack, the preschoolers had more gifts to offer their loved ones, including a packet of seeds for summer blooms, and a pillowcase that the students decorated with a family portrait.

The students also played a bit of a game with their moms and grandmas, showing them a wall of unmarked drawings that each child made of themselves and their mom holding hands. Once the special guests guessed the correct portrait, they were allowed to take them home.

Preschooler Catherine enjoyed the event with her mom, Marion Dunham, and grandma, Linda Machin.

“I feel very special and appreciated with what my daughter did today,” Marion Dunham said.
